Within the classes, everyone was fighting; men, women, and children all contributed to the fight for freedom from Diaz.   Porter based the story on events she experienced and observed in Mexico during 1920 and 1921, in the wash of the Mexican Revolution. Her experiences are very uniform to those of her main character Laura. Laura is an American woman who moves to Mexico to work for the subverter cause.
